so.....Welcome to December! Can you believe it's here? Considering it was still 15*C last week (and I'm in Ontario, Canada) I wasn't totally prepared for December. This fall has just felt like one long mild October, so Christmas has always been way off in my mind. Knowing now that it's only a few weeks away comes with a little bit of a shock for me. Somehow, I've managed to remember to make you guys your free desktop and phone wallpapers downloads! You can click the images to take you to Flickr to download, or just save the images to your computer or device!

A Mid-September Free Treat

Welcome to September...or mid-September I guess. Sorry that there's no calendar with this month's desktop wallpaper. I figured since half the month is gone already, that it won't really be missed.

Speaking of being missed, I've missed blogging! Even though I sometimes find it frustrating (especially those nights where I realize I don't have a post queued up for the next day), I've missed being able to share work, free stuff, inspiration and more with you!

My goal is to get back to regular blogging next week.. and it might just be starting off with one post a week. Since I took the summer off from custom work and took time to slow down, things are now starting to pick up. Custom orders are officially back open (!!) and wedding consults have begun for next year. Plus, it's calendar time! I've been busy the last month working on the 2016 calendars for you guys, and am going to have a sneak peek of those for you in the next blog post! I'll also be covering how my summer went, in terms of the goals I had set for myself, and letting you in on what's to come for me and DZD this fall and winter.

Below are two new wallpapers for you, one for your desktop and one for your phone. Hope you like them! I'll be back to the calendar ones in October (I can't believe it's so close to October!!!?! Time is going by too fast.) Just click on the photos to take you to my Flickr page, where you can download the images...or, if on your phone, just save the image to your gallery/camera roll, and upload to wallpaper from there!

Hope you all have a great weekend, and I'll see you next week!

Behind the Scenes - Brush Lettering Sketches

I thought that I would share with you some behind the scenes of my Good Friday and Easter Sunday posts a couple weekends ago. Even though the posts were little, without anything written to accompany the photos and lettering, I knew that I wanted to still share something to mark both of those days.

I did a lot of different lettering, with different supplies, to try to make something to go with the sentiments of both Good Friday and Easter Sunday. I used my Sakura Koi Water Brush which I currently have filled with watered down sumi ink. Some similar options for water brushes are this one, these ones, or this Pentel Pocket Brush pen, which already has ink in it, or the Pentel Colour Brush. Both of the Pentel pens have a nice rich black ink in them, but I preferred a watered down black, so I mixed my own ink.

The thinner lettering was done with a simple black Sharpie Fine Point marker. I don't really love the look that this marker created, which made me want to get one of the newer Sharpie Brush Markers so badly. Being left handed, I really struggle with brush markers, but as I play more and more with them, I'm slowly just figuring out what works best with me, and with my writing style. I have to step away from fluid writing, like your typical script writing, and treat the lettering more in little swipes, similar to using a pointed pen dipped in ink.

I like that I'm able to share these little lettered sketches with you, after you were able to see the final product. I love seeing the sketching process of other artists, so I think that I'm going to continue to share more too. I wish that I had other steps of this lettering process, but I'll be honest, and let you know that there really aren't any! There was no pencil sketching and refining first. I just dove right in and started writing. For other projects I'll start with pencil, and have a few layers of refinement before settling on a final design. But for most of my brush lettering, I just write it, scan it, and create a clean white background for it to lay on in Photoshop. Hopefully for the next Behind the Scenes, I'll have more scenes for you to actually see!

Hope you have a great weekend! I'll be outside enjoying this sunshine (FINALLY!) and the smells of spring. My flowers have peeked their little green heads through the dirt, and I'm looking forward to planting some buddies for them soon.

Serve the Lord - New Custom Work and Prints

When an old friend Kelly, whom I’ve known since she was born, messaged me with an idea for a custom piece for her home, I was pretty excited to see what she wanted. As newlyweds, Kelly and her husband Cody, wanted a piece to remind them of their wedding day. She sent me some inspiration photos, and the selected verse, and I got to work.

Kelly sent me a photo of her beautiful wedding bouquet, and requested a floral  garland to be included underneath the verse that they had picked out. I pulled the white gerber daisies (with intense black centres), as well as the purple and blue hydrangeas. She was very specific in requesting that no pastels be included in her piece, and they preferred rich, bright, and bold colours.

It was a pleasure to also be able to letter a verse that is a favourite in our home as well. This verse from Joshua 24:15 “As for me and my household we will serve the Lord” means a lot to my husband and me too. Kelly wanted a thicker script, and I added a slight emphasis on the last two words of the verse, making a mental note to those who read this piece that ‘the Lord’ is the central idea. It is He who is the centre, the truth, and the grounding force in our homes.

I enjoyed making this piece, and loved how it turned out so much, that I thought that I would make it available to all of you as well! You can pick up this piece in the shop, now available in three different sizes. A declaration of faith to hang in your home! Get it HERE, or by clicking the image immediately above!
